
A researcher at the University of Oviedo takes apart the "Just Do It" fallacy: around 60% of self-control capacity is inherited, and nine out of ten of us take the escalator. The fix lies less in your willpower and more in how you build your week.
It is half past seven, your gym bag has been in the boot since Monday, and the sofa is giving you that look. Then comes the guilt: if other people manage it, what is wrong with me? As it turns out, what is wrong with you has a fair amount of literature behind it, and none of it is about laziness. It is about a brain doing exactly what it was designed to do: save energy.
Miguel Angel Rodriguez, a predoctoral researcher at the University of Oviedo, published an analysis in August 2026 pointing at something uncomfortable: around 60% of self-control capacity is genetically determined. In other words, more than half of what we call willpower comes as standard, like your height or the colour of your eyes.
The rest of the picture fits. One in three adults and eight in ten adolescents fall short of what the World Health Organization recommends. Nine out of ten of us take the escalator when we could walk up. And of those who set themselves an exercise goal, only half achieve it. When half the population fails, the problem stops being individual.
The underlying explanation is evolutionary. For almost all of our history, moving had a reason: hunting, fleeing, finding water. Nobody went out to run intervals for fun. In a world where calories were scarce, spending them for no reason was a terrible idea, so the brain learned to prefer the cheap option whenever there was no clear reward on the other side.
That brain is still here, only now it lives surrounded by lifts, food delivery and jobs done sitting down. The analysis points to other pieces too: differences in the dopamine system, the composition of the gut microbiota, and even a mother's physical activity during pregnancy, which is associated with how active that person will be as an adult. You chose none of it.
This is where the argument can go wrong, so let us tread carefully. If 60% comes as standard, that leaves 40% that does not. Your brain preferring the sofa does not mean it always wins: it means that if you leave everything to willpower, playing on its home ground, it will win a good number of days.
The practical conclusion is not to give up. It is to stop fighting on the wrong terrain. Stop trying to want it more and start making it cost less. It is the same idea we argued when we made the case that small habits produce real change: the decision is won before you make it.
That last point pays off most over time. "I should move more" commits you to nothing; signing up to something with a name and a set number of kilometres does. The 21 km of the Artemis Challenge are a good example: a small, clear figure you can tick off, which is exactly the kind of reward your brain does understand.
The analysis insists on something we tend to forget: not everyone starts from the same place. Neighbourhoods with worse pavements, fewer parks and more traffic have children who play outdoors less. That is not fixed with motivation. It is fixed with town planning.
And there are experiments with real charm. In Cluj-Napoca, Romania, they offered free bus tickets in exchange for twenty squats in front of a machine, and handed out more than 200,000 of them. It will not solve global inactivity, but it illustrates the idea nicely: when the environment puts the reward close by, people move. No sermons required.
Finding it hard does not make you a lost cause; it makes you a person with a normal brain. Guilt, besides feeling awful, has never got anyone out of the door. Step down from the moral judgement and step up to the logistics: kit ready, a time in the diary, a route that goes past, and a number to reach. Willpower will catch up later, when it is needed.
